It's been 11 years since the Oklahoma Sooners last won a National Championship, but with the 2011 college football season quickly approaching, many analysts have the Sooners listed as one of the best teams in the nation in their preseason polls.

The Sooners seem to have solid draft classes almost every year and are likely set depth-wise for years to come. With that in mind, here is a list of the eight best matchups that could take place in Norman, an opponent's home field or neutral ground that could propel the team to greatness once more.

The Oklahoma Sooners will have to face the Oklahoma State Cowboys without their star wide receiver Ryan Broyles. Broyles has been quarterback Landry Jones main target all season connecting 83 times for 1157 yards and ten touchdowns.

The Oklahoma Sooners travel this weekend to Manhattan, KS to face the undefeated Kansas State Wildcats. Last weekend, the Sooners essentially lost their season after losing to Texas Tech at home. They were ranked #3 in the BCS and guaranteed a place in the BCS National Championship Game if they won the rest of their games. However, all those hopes are now gone.

Following such a heartbreaking loss, Coach Bob Stoops will have his work cut out for him trying to get his team to focus for a very good opponent in the Wildcats. The Wildcats, on the other hand, are still undefeated and have an outside shot of making it to the BCS National Championship Game. A win versus the Sooners will give the Wildcats the big win they need to make a major move in both the human and BCS polls.

In the following days, I will be updating adding relevant information to this blog concerning the game such as an in depth breakdown of the game, injury reports and Vegas lines.

It was deja vu for the No. 2-seeded Oklahoma Sooners on Friday in Fort Worth as they dropped their first game in regional action, 3-2 in 10 innings, to the Dallas Baptist Patriots. The Sooners played the Patriots in a midweek game April 19 in Norman and lost by the same score. Senior starting pitcher Brandon Williams started both games for Dallas Baptist.

ARDMORE, Okla. - Athletic director Joe Castiglione believes Oklahoma is getting closer to resolving the NCAA investigation into its men's basketball program.

Castiglione said after a board of regents meeting Wednesday that there are "signs that we're moving toward resolution" and there "probably will" be developments he can comment on later this summer.

The university has been tightlipped about the investigation since acknowledging in April 2010 that it was working jointly with the NCAA in the process. The school has refused to release any records pertaining to the investigation, instead withholding them until the process is finished.

Former player Keith "Tiny" Gallon has said he took $3,000 from a Florida financial adviser so his high school would release his transcripts and he could play for the Sooners. Phone and e-mail records tied the adviser, Jeffrey Hausinger, to former Oklahoma assistant coach Oronde Taliaferro, who resigned following last season when the investigation was beginning.

"We're certainly hopeful to get it to a resolution soon," Castiglione said. "It just needs to be resolved. We've gathered every piece of information we could possibly gather and responded to every request, facilitated any and all interviews. We're just waiting for the next step."

Oklahoma was on probation for major rules violations involving hundreds of impermissible recruiting phone calls by former coach Kelvin Sampson at the time the new investigation started.

Jeff Capel, who was the Sooners' coach when Gallon was recruited, was fired in March and replaced by Lon Kruger.

Through the first eleven weeks of the 2011 college football season, the Stanford Cardinal's quarterback, Andrew Luck, dominated the Heisman Trophy race and discussion. However, following a close win to the USC Trojans and then losing the next week to the Oregon Ducks, Luck no longer leads in the race for the Heisman Trophy Award. Instead, the quarterback of the Oklahoma State Cowboys, Brandon Weeden, is now considered the front-runner.

Weeden has led the Cowboys to an undefeated season thus far and has them currently ranked #2 in the BCS standings. Though he is currently the leader, he has not separated himself from the rest of the hopefuls. He does, however, still have to play the #5 Oklahoma Sooners. If the Cowboys beat the Sooners, then they are going to the BCS National Championship Game in New Orleans, LA. One of the major, if not most important qualifications needed by a quarterback to win the award is to have his team in contention for the National Championship. The only thing that can stop the Cowboys from going to the BCS Title Game is if the Sooners beat them.

If Weeden is able to beat the Sooners and has a descent to good game will he win the Heisman Trophy Award?

The Oklahoma State Cowboys are behind the Alabama Crimson Tide in the BCS Rankings. The Cowboys have one more game left versus a top ten opponent in the Oklahoma Sooners. Alabama has already played the LSU Tigers and lost at home.

After an amazing four touchdown and 479 yards passing game versus the Oklahoma Sooners, Robert Griffin III (RG3) launched himself back into the Heisman Trophy Race. Though he is currently ranked third in ESPN's straw poll of Heisman voters, he still has a great chance of jumping to the top of the list. Heisman voters and the media aren't dead set on any particular candidate so far, thus making it a fluid Heisman Race going into the last weekend of the regular season.

Griffin has an advantage over the current top two in the straw poll because he plays against the Texas Longhorns next weekend, while Trent Richardson and Andrew Luck are sitting at home because their season's are over.

If Griffin were to win the Heisman Trophy Award, would this play against Oklahoma be his Heisman Moment? It led to the Baylor Bears first win against the Oklahoma Sooners ever in history.

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops is putting together another top 15 recruiting class, and his 2012 edition reached the double-digit commitment mark Wednesday night as the Sooners landed a verbal pledge from Texarkana (Texas) offensive lineman John Michael McGee.

“When I went up to Oklahoma for junior day in January, it felt like my home away from home," McGee told 247Sports.com. "My parents went with me way back when I visited and they both liked it too. Oklahoma has a nice campus, they win championships, have what I’m looking for academically and can help me accomplish my goals."

The 6-foot-4, 260-pounder also held scholarship offers from Notre Dame, USC, Oklahoma State and Clemson among others. The biggest reason he'll end up a Sooner, however, was the time and effort the coaching staff made in the recruiting process.

“They were the first to offer me and have been recruiting me the longest,” McGee said. “Coach (Josh) Heupel and Coach (James) Patton have come down to watch me as much as they can, including basketball games and have shown how much they want me.”

McGee is the 10th commitment for Oklahoma's upcoming class and the fourth from the state of Texas. McGee could play either guard or tackle in college but will likely end up on the inside next to fellow 2012 offensive line commit Ty Darlington.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys finished 3rd in the Final BCS Standings even though they blew-out the #10 Oklahoma Sooners in their final game of the season. They were ranked behind the Alabama Crimson Tide and will not go to the BCS National Championship Game at the Sugar Bowl.

This seems unfair to many. OSU beat seven teams with an above .500 win percentage to Bama's three, and they won four games against ranked opponents to Bama's three. Also, Alabama has already played the LSU Tigers and lost at home this season. OSU should get their shot!

The argument against the Cowboys is the fact they lost to a 6-6 Iowa State team and Bama lost against the #1 LSU Tigers. This is clearly a worse loss. Many have also stated that they know the Tide is better than the Cowboys even though they haven't played. This is purely subjective speculation.

I think OSU was ripped off by the BCS, do you agree?

Currently, the Oklahoma State Cowboys are #3 in the BCS Rankings behind the Alabama Crimson Tide and the LSU Tigers. Next weekend, OSU plays the #10 Oklahoma Sooners for the Big 12 Championship. The LSU Tigers will be playing in the SEC Championship Game versus the Georgia Bulldogs. Alabama, however, will not be playing because their season is over after having lost the SEC West to LSU.

If OSU beats Oklahoma by a blowout, will they be able to jump Bama in the BCS?

A holding call that brings back a touchdown or a protection breakdown that leads to your star quarterback getting hit is the only thing that will bring you attention.

No penalties and no sacks allowed. Another successful day at the office.

And of the five spots on that line, the center position may be the least glamorous.

That is why, when searching the top 150 recruits on Rivals, there is only one center.

Eleven defensive tackles. Thirteen running backs. Twenty-one receivers. And just one center.

Ty Darlington, a senior at Apopka (Fla.) High School, committed to Oklahoma last week and gives the Sooners the top-ranked center from the 2012 class.

And Darlington understands the importance of the only position besides quarterback that touches the ball on every play.

“It is basically the quarterback of the offensive line, just directing everything up front and making a lot of calls,” he said. “You have to know everything and know all the protections and calls up front.”

That is something Darlington was taught from an early age. His father, Rick, is the head coach at Apopka and is an offensive line specialist.

And that gave Darlington the chance to be around football all the time.

“Being around the program, I was always being coached on the little things,” Darlington said. “I may have even taken it for granted, some of the extra coaching I was given.”

The added instruction translated into a successful high school career for the 6-foot-3, 275-pound center. In turn, that led to offers from various schools across the country.

And while some closer colleges intrigued him, OU was always at the top of his list. It had been from a young age.

Darlington's mother, Shelly, was an OU cheerleader in the 1980s, and her love for the Sooners rubbed off on her seven children.

“She showed me a picture the other day from when I was like a year old and I had an Oklahoma shirt on,” Darlington said. “I guess it runs in my blood.”

And his love for the Sooners grew throughout his childhood. Darlington would visit his mother's side of the family in Oklahoma and occasionally catch a big game.

“I went to an OU-Texas game at the Cotton Bowl when I was in eighth grade,” Darlington said. “Growing up, I watched all their great teams, even the national championship team in 2000.”

Now, 11 years later, Darlington took the first step in becoming part of one of those legendary teams. But he doesn't want to think about that yet. He still has another year of high school.

“It's a long way away still,” he said. “But it's hard to not get excited.”
