The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) is asking politically-charged actress Susan Sarandon to apologize to the Catholic community and "all those she may have offended" when she referred to Pope Benedict XVI as a "Nazi" at the Hamptons Film Festival this weekend, according The Hollywood Reporter.ADL's National Director Abraham H. Foxman said in a statement, "We hope that Susan Sarandon will have the good sense to apologize to the Catholic community and all those she may have offended with this disturbing, deeply offensive and completely uncalled for attack on the good name of Pope Benedict XVI."Ms. Sarandon may have her differences with the Catholic Church, but that is no excuse for throwing around Nazi analogies. Such words are hateful, vindictive and only serve to diminish the true history and meaning of the Holocaust.""Sarandon told actor Bob Balaban in an interview on Saturday that she had sent the Pope a copy of the anti death penalty book, Dead Man Walking. She starred in the 1995 film adaptation of the book. Clarifying which Pope received her package, Sarandon said, "The last one, not this Nazi one we have now."Pope Benedict XVI, Joseph Ratzinger, was member of the Hitler Youth movement as boy, though unenthusiastically by most accounts. Membership was required by law for all 14-year-old German boys after December 1939.The ADL called Sarandon's comment "disturbing, deeply offensive and completely uncalled for."Does Susan Sarandon deserve to exercise her First Amendment right speak out against organizations she opposes? Or should she issue an apology for offending the Catholic community's members and its figurehead?
In an interview this week, Corey Feldman said he fears that lingering effects of sexual abuse contributed to the death of his co-star and life-long friend Corey Haim and that child molestation is "rampant" in the entertainment industry, sadly having fallen victim to it himself as well. According to CNN.com, "The actor previously revealed to GQ that he was raped by his assistant as a child.""It's something that will be addressed in my inner soul for the rest of my life, and it's something that truly affects me,” the eighties icon and former child star told the magazine."I was surrounded by [pedophiles] when I was 14 years old. ... Didn't even know it. It wasn't until I was old enough to realize what they were and what they wanted ... till I went, Oh, my God. They were everywhere," Feldman, now forty years-old, recalls looking back. "The No. 1 problem in Hollywood was and is and always will be pedophilia," he told ABC's Nightline in an interview aired Thursday. He refused to name the culprit, but insists that one specific major player preying on child actors in the industry was Corey Haim's assailant. "There's one person to blame in the death of Corey Haim. And that person happens to be a Hollywood mogul. And that person needs to be exposed, but, unfortunately, I can't be the one to do it," he said."There's a lot of good people in this industry. But there's also a lot of really, really, sick, corrupt, people in this industry."Is there a way to protect innocents eager for fame or will status always safeguard high-powered predators with ill intentions? Can pedophilia in showbiz be stopped?
"After performing at the 2011 VMAs," MTV.com reported, "Beyoncé Knowles unbuttoned her sparkly jacket and rubbed her belly -- announcing her pregnancy to the world. The camera then cut to Jay-Z and Kanye West in the audience and their over-the-top jubilant reaction."The glowing girl has been married to Hov for three years and "has said time and time again that she planned on having a baby by the time she was 30." Not so coincidentally, she happens to be turning thirty next month. Are fans surprised by their new addition or was their pregnancy the anticipated logical next step for the power couple?
RiRi's had a lot of different hair colors and styles. Which is your favorite?
"Whether I'm wearing lots of makeup or no makeup, I'm always the same person inside," Lady Gaga gushes to Harper's Bazaar in its October issue....At least her character can't be called into question even when her make-up routine can. The magazine credits Gaga as posing "barefaced" for next month's cover and while some are raving about how "gutsy" it is to be photographed for a major publication with no make-up (what a brave soul) others are quick to note the flaw in implying that her flawless look was achieved without cosmetics. Scroll down to the comments on this page to check out shrewd fans' reactions that seem to be a more realistic reflection of the shoot. But is saying that Gaga is "barefaced" the same as saying that her look was achieved without any make-up and she's completely scrubbed clean? HB does note, "To get Lady Gaga's no-makeup look, try Studio Sculpt SPF 15 Foundation ($29.15), Prep + Prime Highlighter ($23), Brow Gel ($15) and Prep + Prime Lash ($15). All M.A.C." Despite not necessarily saying that said products were used, all seem likely from the photos. Gaga's waterline under her eyes seems to really pop, as does her famous pout-- though obviously not lined in traditional methods, darkened to make them stand out, there's definitely a flash of light luster. Not to mention her unblemished and glowing skin. Maybe she's born with it? But, really, maybe it's Maybelline...er, M.A.C.Can a makeunder be considered the same as being barefaced? Did Gaga really bare it all for Harper's Bazaar? Or does simply skipping black mascara and loud lipstick get one considered a make-up-less martyr?
Impossibly pretty pairings Leonardo DiCaprio and model Bar Rafaeli, and Blake Lively and her co-star boyfriend Penn Badgley, both parted ways from their partners in amicable May splits mere weeks ago. Has a super-charged new dazzling duo resulted?Ladies-man Leo, who courted Bar on and off for six years without putting a ring on it, has been spotted sharing smiles with beautiful Blake in New York and, more recently, embracing on a yacht in Cannes and seen hand-in-hand in Monte Carlo. DiCaprio also staked Blake as his girl at a Grand Prix party on Sunday, according to Us Weekly. An "onlooker" is reported as saying, "He looked very in love. Her face lit up when Leo was talking. He had introduced Blake as his girlfriend. I would say they're totally smitten!"Are they hooking up to work on a big Hollywood project together? Or just hooking up?
"Splash" and "Kill Bill" actress Daryl Hannah was one of nearly 100 people who were arrested in Washington D.C. on Tuesday for again protesting the proposed Keystone XL pipeline, according to a press release from Rainforest Action Network. Over 500 activists have been arrested since August 20 for staging a stand against the potential environmental hazard, camped outside of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. The Associated Press reports that Hannah sat by the White House sidewalk and refused to move under orders from U.S. Park Police, shouting, “No to the Keystone pipeline” while she was being restrained and removed. "The planned pipeline will run from the Canadian tar sands in Alberta to refineries on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. It is currently waiting on approval from the White House," according to The Huffington Post. The State Department has officially declared that the pipeline would have "no significant impact" on the environment and suggested that the project move forward, however a New York Times editorial piece still vehemently opposed the pipeline. "We have two main concerns:" it read, "the risk of oil spills along the pipeline, which would traverse highly sensitive terrain, and the fact that the extraction of petroleum from the tar sands creates far more greenhouse emissions than conventional production does." The Natural Resources Defense Council website also presents a pretty compelling argument. "TransCanada's proposed Keystone XL tar sands pipeline would be the third new dedicated tar sands pipeline, and could import as much as 900,000 barrels per day of costly and polluting fuel, locking the United States into a dependence on hard-to-extract oil and generating a massive expansion of the destructive tar sands oil operations in Canada."Tar sands developments are already wreaking havoc on both people and wildlife in the region. For aboriginal peoples, the mining reduces local water supplies and increases exposure to toxic substances. Expanding tar sands operations also heightens the risk for NRDC's Peace-Athabasca Delta BioGem -- just downstream from these developments.""In addition to the extraction impacts, the proposed pipeline would stretch 2000 miles from Alberta, Canada to Texas, threatening to contaminate freshwater supplies in America's agricultural heartland and increase refinery emissions in already-polluted communities of the U.S. Gulf Coast."Is protesting the risk that the pipeline presents a worthwhile endeavor?

Is there an appropriate statute of limitations for the despicable acts that public figures are demonized for? Or are statements made under the influence of intoxicating substances and the stresses of celebrity reflective of one's character and simply impossible to forgive and forget? Robert Downey Jr. doesn't think so. Accepting an American Cinematheque Award presented by longtime friend and fallen icon Mel Gibson, Robert Downey, Jr. admonished the audience for ostracizing their Oscar-winning peer, "Unless you are without sin -- and if you are, you are in the wrong (expletive) industry -- you should forgive him and let him work." Gibson's 2006 anti-Semitic rants after a DUI arrest seemed like the most inconceivable low point for any average citizen, let alone a world-renowned celebrity. However, just over a year ago tapes surfaced of him making shockingly violent threats against his then-girlfriend, peppered with additional racist remarks and misogynistic tirades. "During his presentation," E! Online reports, "Gibson remembered being warned about hiring Downey for "Air America" in 1990 because of his troubled private life. Downey has always credited Gibson for being the first person in town who gave him a job during some of his years battling substance abuse."Downey fondly recalled that Gibson had told him to "help the next guy" once he was in the position to do so, "It's reasonable to assume...he didn't imagine the next guy would be him," he said. Are Gibson's grossly inappropriate actions inexcusable? Or should society reflect on Mel Gibson's motivation and mental state at the time, evaluate what sort of person he really is,and forgive-- as formerly troubled friend Robert Downey Jr. has suggested?
Lindsay Lohan either can't seem to catch a break or doesn't deserve yet another one-- depending on who you ask. The 25-year-old actress was taken into custody after Superior Court Judge Stephanie Sautner revoked her probation yesterday."There has been violation after violation," Sautner said. Bail was set at $100,000, it was immediately posted."We're dealing with someone on probation," said Lohan's attorney, Shawn Holley. "Most people on probation don't always do things perfectly."A city prosecutor recommended jail time, but Sautner set a Nov. 2 hearing to decide Lindsay's fate. She had been released early four times previously, due to jail overcrowding. "If jail meant something in the state of California now, maybe I'd put her in jail," Sautner said.Another odd occurrence added to her sordid story today. Less than 24 hours after Lindsay's handcuffed journey to jail, she couldn't make it to her community service assignment on time. "Lindsay Lohan hit the L.A. County Morgue in style this morning ... rolling up in an $80,000 Porsche Panamera ... before being turned away at the door. Lindsay was spotted at a back entrance ... talking with a morgue staffer who appeared to be informing the actress that she needed to go to a different entrance ... redirecting her to the front of the building," TMZ reported. "LiLo was 40 minutes late ... and the Coroner's Office sent her ass home without credit." The site says she claims she'll try again tomorrow. Should the arrogant actress be sent to jail for repeatedly disobeying judges' orders? Or, despite her mistakes, does Lindsay Lohan deserve her freedom?
