Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 premiered today, Friday July 15, at 12am, attracting die-hard fans to the theaters to catch the last installment of Pottermania. In fact, so many people attended the midnight premier that, less than 1 hour after its release, HP 7.2 has broken a record -- $43.5 million in midnight box office sales, beating the record formerly held by Twilight: Eclipse by $13.5 million. According to the Wall Street Journal, "Most box office analysts were forecasting an opening around $145-$150 million before the Friday numbers came out." Looks like they're on track to achieve that estimate.

Right now the film has a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes -- an unusually high number that I expect will fall as more reviews come in. Huffington Post's major complaint was that the film was too short; Rolling Stone enjoyed it as well, but points out that those who don't know their Harry Potter probably shouldn't spend the time or money. Also, check out Rolling Stone's Guide to Harry Potter, with Peter Travers' reviews of all eight films.

So will you be contributing to those box office sales by seeing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 in the theaters, or will you wait for the movie to come out on DVD, or abstain altogether?
