More than half a billion eggs have recalled due to salmonella risk. How worried are you about eggs? How about the rest of your food?

Are free-range organic-feed eggs any safer?

From Wikipedia: "USDA regulations apply only to poultry and indicate that the animal has been allowed access to the outside. The USDA regulations do not specify the quality or size of the outside range nor the duration of time an animal must have access to the outside." So the short answer is "no". It's just another marketing ploy that the public has fallen for hook, line and sinker.

No, certified organic farmers must let their chickens out of the cage and go outside. That is by definition of organic livestock. Organic farming is based on a Farm Plan, represented by the organic application, that addresses the actions being taken by the farmer to maximize the integration of organic principles. How to find non-recalled or safe eggs: -Farmer’s Markets- most farmer’s will even let you come to their farm and pick your own eggs or give you a tour! -Smaller grocery stores that carry local, sustainable farm eggs -Buy organic, cage-free (really cage-free), pastured eggs -Make sure your your eggs come from small, local farms that raise their chickens outside of cages and treat them humanely. -Avoid insanely cheap eggs, which means they were factory farmed and all of the chickens were raised in tiny cages, biting and pooping on each other and then transported to another factory to be sorted and packaged to sell at grocery stores around the nation.

Had to vote "not worried" since I haven't eaten an egg or anything containing an egg in the ten years I've been vegan. The solution is so blindingly simple...if it makes you sick, don't eat it.

Larry, We are devoted fans - you cannot retire! Back on topic, WHY DIDN'T YOU SHOW PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE CHICKENS IN THEIR TINY CAGES AT THAT FACTORY? Crowding is clearly linked to disease. Please revisit this issue. Americans expect too many cheap protein sources and they need to understand the consequences. They are being misled - please help stop this problem.

I am more worried about the horrifying animal abuse of those sickening factories in IOWA. I will buy my own chicken now. I am in Phoenix,AZ and a woman used to sell eggs down the street . Those poor animals cooped up like that. I got food poisoning(tomain) years ago from SWANSON'S canned chicken and I wrote them a letter. Campbell's is the parent company of Swanson's. They paid for my days off of work and my medical bill at the emergency room. No wonder people are so unhappy and aggressive lately. Not only is the economy going down the tubes, our veins are being filled with toxins from all fronts. From the spraying of the food, to the animal abuse and hormones......overpopulation......mercury in the tuna, etc...

I believe there was an investigation going on for a time, right? We just didn't know about it until now. I cook eggs for myself and my children almost every day of the week. Why would I stop using eggs now? I also believe that eating any food you eat that wasn't grown or caught by you, is a risk we all choose to take every day.

Let's see...steroids, hormones and antibiotics, deformed and mutant foodstuffs, genetically engineered food everywhere with absolutely no idea what will happen down the road? As Alfred E, Newman said, "Why worry?" Personally, I am moving to Nicaragua where the local produce is grown by people who can't afford all of this crap, so food is in keeping with that sensible deciding factor when thinking about food: 'Would this be something your grandmother would recognize?'

What is wrong with people, this was not an isolated incident!! The factory farm responsible for half a billion eggs was repeat offender! The USDA does not care about your health and does very little to protect you. We are a nation of cheap, unsafe food! These unsafe eggs are just the beginning of the problem with how our food is brought to our tables. A nation of unsafe eggs is a nation of unsafe food, controlled by a few large agricultural factory farms. Factory farms raise livestock in complete confinement by “packing” in as many animals as possible per square foot. The result is cheap meat, poultry, eggs, and milk. The results are also human health dangers, animal health dangers, pollution, and destruction of biodiversity. Cheap food comes with a high cost to peoples’ health and the environment. Please rethink this issue! What is it going to take- a death of your loved one or yourself plagued with a slow, painful, strange chronic illness.
