Mack Brown and former Longhorns QB Marty Akins nominated along with baseball great Keith Moreland and former women's swimming coach Richard Quick.

June 27, 2011

WACO, Texas -- Football coach Mack Brown tops a storied list of Texas Longhorns nominated for consideration into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. Keith Moreland (Baseball) and Richard Quick (former women's swimming head coach) are also among the 20 primary ballot nominees.

Marty Akins (Football) is included on the veterans ballot.

Official Voting Members (OVM) of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame will once again be able to help the selection committee induct the newest class. Those who have joined the museum's Official Voting Member program (OVM) will receive their ballots this summer.

The public can join with only a $25 membership fee and receive an official ballot by going to the museum's Web site. The OVM registration deadline to be able to vote for the upcoming class is Aug. 1, 2011.

The announcement of the Class of 2011 will be made in September.

The Texas Sports Hall of Fame Selection Committee, comprised of media members around the state and chaired by Texas Football Magazine's Dave Campbell, set the final ballot of nominees.

A member of the Longhorn Hall of Honor, Mack Brown joins Darrell Royal as only the second coach in UT history to reach the 100-win plateau at Texas. Through the past decade, Brown's Longhorns have won seven of nine bowl games, including a stretch of five straight for the first time in school history. The 2005 Paul W. "Bear" Bryant National Coach of the Year award winner, and coach of the 2005 BCS National Champions, Brown is one of a handful of coaches in the history of college football to lead two separate programs to a Top Five national finish.

Keith Moreland was a praiseworthy baseball player at Texas from 1973-75. Moreland was a career .388 hitter with Texas and was a three-time All-American. He led the Longhorns to three NCAA College World Series appearances. Moreland was the co-captain of the 1973 National Championship team. Moreland played 12 major league seasons, primarily with the Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago Cubs. His jersey number was retired by UT in 2010.

Richard Quick was the Women's Swimming head coach from 1982-88 and during this time he built Texas into a swimming powerhouse. Quick's teams won five straight NCAA titles from 1984-88 and six SWC titles. He coached 17 Olympians, 25 individual NCAA champions, 11 NCAA relay titlists and two swimmers of the year. His accomplishments culminated in five NCAA Coach of the Year distinctions. Quick was the head coach of U.S Olympic teams in 1988, 1996, 2000 and 2004. Quick passed away in June 2009 after battling an inoperable malignant brain tumor that was diagnosed in December 2008.

Marty Akins led UT to 27 wins during his three seasons as quarterback from 1973-75. He is the only player to start three years at quarterback under Royal and was the first wishbone quarterback to earn All-America honors in 1975. That year, he was also co-captain and MVP of the Southwest Conference championship team that finished 10-2. For his career, Akins totaled 1,974 rushing yards, 1,188 passing yards and 25 touchdowns.

For two seasons, the Texas Longhorns have struggled. In 2010, they failed to make a bowl game with a 5-7 record and finished last in the Big 12 South with a 2-6 conference record. In 2011, the Longhorns improved to 7-4 and are sixth in the Big 12 with a 4-4 conference record.

Texas fans are used to playing for championships. This season they had 28 underclassmen in their two deep and 13 starting. Therefore, next season they will be playing with a team loaded with juniors and sophomore's on their two-deep.

Will the Texas Longhorns be back to form in 2012?

The Texas Longhorns will visit the UCLA Bruins in a rematch of last year's upset loss in the third week of the 2011 college football season. It has been a slow start for both team this season. After defeating Rice convincingly, the Longhorns struggled at home versus BYU. The Bruins, on the other hand, were defeated on the road by Houston, an inferior and non-BCS team, but were able to bounce back to defeat San Jose State at home.

In his fourth season as head coach of the Bruins, Rick Neuheisel finds himself on the hot seat. Many analysts and commentators believe this is a must win for the coach if he would like to keep his job. Personally, I do not think it matters if he wins this game or not, this is probably his last season for the Bruins.

Stat Comparison of Both Teams
  • Rushing Offense - ranked 34; 197.50 rushing yards per game
  • Passing Offense - ranked 82; 200.00 passing yards per game
  • Total Offense - ranked 60; 397.50 total yards per game
  • Scoring Offense - ranked 75; 25.50 points per game

Even though UCLA hosts Texas at home, I don't think they can get the win for the PAC 12. The Longhorns are not as good as they have been in previous seasons, but they have enough weapons on offense and defense to get the job done against the Bruins. I expect to see the Longhorns run the ball a lot on the Bruins defense which has given up 180.50 rushing yards per game to inferior opponents. Texas will probably have over 250 yards rushing in this game.

Last year the Bruins were able to upset the Longhorns in their house, and this year they will return the favor. Texas is a 3.5 favorite, and I expect them to cover this easily. They just have way too many weapons on offense and defense to not destroy UCLA. Neuheisel has already acknowledged his job is on the line this season, and after this game it should be as good a gone.

UPDATE
Following three interceptions given up by UCLA's Prince, Texas jumped to a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter. UCLA was able to muster a score after driving the field for 74 yards on a touchdown. The next Texas possession, the Bruins defense caused a three and out and put UCLA in a position to get back in the game. However, Texas was able to also hold UCLA to a three and out, and took advantage of it by scoring on their next drive. In the last seconds of the first half, the Bruins made a 54 yard field goal making the score 28-10. The Bruins get the ball starting the second half.

UPDATE
On the opening drive, the Bruins drove the ball 44 yards to the Texas 32 and kicked the field goal. Texas struck back driving the ball 71 yards for a touchdown. Currently, the score is 35-13 midway through the third with UCLA driving.

UPDATE
On its very next possession, the UCLA Bruins drove the ball 55 yards for another touchdown and got back into this game. With four minutes left in the third quarter, the score is 35-20 Texas.

UPDATE
Texas probably put this game away on the following drive by scoring another touchdown. The score is now 42-20 with two minutes left in the third quarter. UCLA needs a quick score if they want to have a chance for the comeback.

UPDATE
Texas has piled on now by adding another score with only three minutes left in the fourth. The score is now 49-20 Longhorns.
