Season 10 of American Idol has come to a close and now we have a new reigning champion, Scotty McCreery, the 17 year old from Garner,North Carolina.  He auditioned for the show in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and the judges were very impressed from the start with his deep bass voice.  At 12 or 13 he says, his mom told him that’s when his voice changed.  She said, “It fell off a cliff.”

Season 10 was a season full of changes too.  Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler joined Randy Jackson on the judges panel, Jennifer brought her “pop” know how and Steven specialized in rock.  Jimmy Iovine was brought in as “the mentor” and gave guidance to the contestants.  Which I think brought more polish to this season’s singers.  We witnessed a first ever save from elimination move.   Singing for his life, Casey Abrams was interrupted by Randy and Steven, mid song, to be told they were using their one save to keep him in the competition.

This season was full of firsts and changes.  Did you enjoy season 10 of American Idol?

Winning American Idol on a night filled with the best in music surrounding you would be unreal for any teenager.  I can’t imagine what Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery must have been feeling.  To be in the company of superstars like Tim McGraw, Lady Gaga, U2, Tony Bennett, Lil Jon, Beyonce, Carrie Underwood and Judas Priest and still have the added pressure of the “big announcement” hanging over their heads would be unthinkable for two teens. But these are country strong kids and they came prepared for tonight’s shootout and they showed that they could handle the pressure, but still two hours was a long time to have to deal.  It helped that they got to surprise their favorite teachers with a new Ford Focus, then Ryan Seacrest surprised them with their very own.  A new car added to the growing excitement.

Scotty and Tim McGraw paired up to sing McGraw’s hit “Live Like You Were Dying.”
Lauren teams up with Carrie Underwood to sing her country hit “Before He Cheats.”  These were dream duets, but how did our duo withstand all the hype being poured down on them?  They did just like they have done all season - well - very well!

The shootout is over and our young guns are both on their way to fabulous country careers.  After a record 122 million votes, Scotty McCreery was named the 10th season’s new American Idol!  Congratulations Scotty!

Are you happy with the winner?

Ryan Seacrest told us tonight our votes will change lives, but from what I’ve seen over the last few months the lives of these two teenagers, Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery, have already changed.  The Nokia Stage is only a launch pad for the bigger and better that’s coming their way.

Round 1: Contestant’s Favorite Song

Scotty sang his rendition of “Gone” and it was brilliant according to Randy Jackson.  Jennifer Lopez said it was explosive.

Lauren Alaina sang Carrie Underwood’s “Flat On The Floor” and Jennifer thought it was full of attack and crazy.  Her voice sounded great even though she injured her vocal cords earlier today.

Randy:  Round 1 goes to Scotty

Jennifer: Round 1 goes to Scotty

Steven: Round 1 goes to Lauren

Round 2:  Our American Idol’s Idol pick

Scotty’s Idol is George Strait and George picked “Check Yes or No”  for Scotty to sing.

Lauren’s Idol is Carrie Underwood and she picked Pam Tillis’ “Maybe It was Memphis”

Randy: Round 2 goes to Lauren

Jennifer: Round 2 goes to Lauren

Steven: Round 2 goes to Lauren

Round 3: Final song.  The winner will record it as their first single.

Scotty sang “I Love You This Big” and it left Randy marveling and proud of his brilliant vocals.  Jennifer called him a great story teller-”Amazing”

Lauren’s single was “Like My Mother Does” Randy said it was an amazing summation of her journey.  Jennifer said it was a tight race, but she may have just won American Idol.  Steven told her she gave it up to mom.

Randy: slight edge to Lauren

Jennifer: slight edge to Lauren

Steven: Lauren hands down

It’s pretty obvious Nashville has benefited from the talent discovered on American idol over the years.  I’m thinking of Carrie Underwood, Kellie Pickler and Josh Gracin.  We can add two more very talented, up and coming, country stars to the list, Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina, thanks to American Idol.  It’s only a matter of time before we are buying their records on i tunes.  Who do you think will be the biggest Country artist post American Idol, Lauren Alaina or Scotty McCreery?

The final two American Idol contestants have been announced after a mere 95 million votes were counted.  Legendary record producer and mentor to the contestants Jimmy Iovine predicted that the finale will have "a guy in it."  He was right!  This season will have the youngest finale in American Idol history with Scotty McCreery, 17 and Lauren Alaina, 16.

Fellow contestant Haley Reinhart was sent home, but before leaving we got to watch her blossom into quite a star. Her exit song was "Bennie and the Jets"  She told us "This is the biggest platform any girl, anybody, could ask for.  I rocked it out, and I had a blast.

We do not know who will win American Idol 10 but we do know for sure he or she will be a future country superstar!  Who do you think will win Scotty McCreery or Lauren Alaina?

Seven days from now American Idol will be live from the NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE, but tonight is the fight for the finale and the Top 3 are busy competing with three rounds of songs.

Round 1: Personal Picks
Round 2: Jimmy Iovine Picks
Round 3: Judges Pick

Round 1:

Scotty McCreery is up first singing Lonestar’s “Amazed” - a song that lets his tone shine through.  Steven Tyler quoted the lyrics back to him saying you’re “getting better and better.”  Jennifer Lopez said “A million girls out there wish you were singing to them.” Randy Jackson liked how he put a period on the end of the song.

Lauren Alaina went after votes singing Faith Hills “Wild One.”  Beyonce’ thought a fun song like this one would help loosen her up and it did.  Jennifer thought she created a moment and Randy said she psyched herself up before she came out.  Steven warned her to be ready for America to be all over her.

Haley Reinhart rocked out with Led Zepplin’s “What Is and What Should Never Be” - she was fearless.  Beyonce’ said she’s the type of performer that makes you believe in what she believes in.  Randy said this is what it’s all about - slaying it and crazy vocals!

Judges pick for Round 1 winner = Haley “hands down!”

Round 2:

A guitar slinging Scotty McCreery sang Garth Brooks’ “Are You Going To Kiss Me Or Not?”  Steven remarked he never heard him deliver a chorus like that before and Jennifer told him to remember what being in the “zone” felt like.  Randy pointed out that Garth Brooks is a great performer and that Scotty “did that tonight.

Lauren Alaina delivered The band Perry’s “If I Die Young”  Jimmy Iovine told her it was a song that was in her vocal sweet spot.  Jennifer remarked about her beautiful tone and Randy liked her song choice.  Steven loved it as well.

Haley sang the abstract Fleetwood Mac’s hit “Rhiannon” at Jimmy’s request and Steven thanked her for reminding him why he fell in love with Stevie Nicks.  Jennifer thought it was another beautiful moment.

Judges pick for Round 2 winner = Steven Tyler thinks it’s Lauren Alaina and Randy and Jennifer pick Scotty.

Round 3:

Scotty was given Kenny Rogers’ “She Believes In Me” and Steven thought his performance was over the top.  Jennifer said “You showed us!”  Randy said it was sweet and tender in the front and hit the chorus very nicely.

Lauren got to sing Lee ann Womack’s 2000 hit “I Hope You Dance.”  Jennifer said she gave her “the goosies” from head to toe and must have won round 3 already.  Randy told her she was in the “zone” and Steven said it was like she owned the Grand Ole Opry.

Haley sang Alanis Morissette’s “You Ought To Know” and Randy was a big fan saying it was amazing and soulful.  Steven said it was perfect and incredible.  While Jennifer said no one could match her chorus.

Judges pick for Round 3 winner = Steven says Haley / Jennifer and Randy say Lauren

Who do you say will win Scotty McCreery, Lauren Alaina or Haley Reinhart?

From day one I thought James Durbin would be one of the Top Two on American idol Finale night.  Also, I thought Pia would be there with him, but what do I know?   Based on James’s last two performances, I thought he was very secure in his bid to continue on American Idol to the Final Two.  His last two performances were some of the best of the Top 4 night.  So I was shocked at the announcement.  It reminded me of the surprise I felt at Chris Daughtry ousting during season 5.  Hopefully, James will go on to become a “big deal” artist outside of American Idol like Chris.  Ryan Seacrest cautioned us last evening to make sure and vote by saying “ Remember what happened to Chris Daughtry.”  Wow, Ryan’s warning must have gone unheeded by James fans, but it’s not too late for some of us who still have a favorite left.  So vote, vote, vote!

Are you surprised by James Durbin’s elimination?

We are down to the final four and only two weeks to the finale! And here are some memorable moments on American Idol Top 4 night...

James Durbin sang Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” giving Randy Jackson some fond memories of playing bass a million times to it while touring with Journey.  He said “You did my band proud.” James told us that from day 1, on American Idol, to now he hasn’t stopped believing!  All that believing is getting him somewhere fast .  Steven Tyler told him that tonight was a little indication of what’s left to come.

Haley Reinhart sang Michael Jackson’s "Earth Song" and afterwards found it hard to get put down about something that meant so much to her, but not all the judges liked it, especially Randy. There were three different opinions and Haley didn’t like two out of the three.  Steven said the other judges were wrong and that she nailed it.

Ryan Seacrest asked Scotty McCreery, “What would it mean to be in the top three? “ Scotty said “I’d kiss the grass and eat fried chicken!  I’ve been away from home too long and it would be great to get back”...during the hometown visit week.  He went on to sing the beautiful Alan Jackson hit “Where Were You When The World Stopped Turning?”  Randy said “It’s a great amazing song, it was the perfect song. Simple guy singing simple songs.  You’re ready for stardom!”  Jennifer Lopez praised him saying “I’m in love with you, what you stand for, what you bring to your music, you know who and what you are about.  That’s the mark of someone who is meant to do this.”

Lauren Alaina’s song choice related to her because of all the tornadoes in the south.  She sang out the lyrics to “Do It Anyway,” Martina McBride’s special inspirational hit.  As she sang .. “building something from nothing”  the lyrics and her sweet voice touched home with the audience - lots of cheers!  Steven said “your voice is pure and simple, you broke my heart again.”  Jennifer said again that she was so proud and “I want you standing there and the confetti coming down!” Randy yelled America Lauren is back - in it to win it!  Steven shared that “nothing was wrong with that performance!”  Lauren told us that the song means a lot to her and you could tell by the way she sang it.  Way to go Lauren!

Round one is done and Jennifer said everybody did good, but for first place I’d have to go with.....” and that’s when the audience yelled out their favorites.According to Randy the title for best of the night is a three way tie-Scotty, James and Lauren. Hey, no one asked Steven for his opinion.

Round two started off with Haley singing “I Love You”  and ended with a roar from the audience.  Jennifer told her “Look at what you are capable of baby.”  Randy said “You had a moment right here.”  Steven Tyler said “Classic moment for classic Haley.  You just ‘Reinharted’ it into next week.”

Lady Gaga declared “Scotty is a lot more conservative than I thought.”  And Scotty said when he met her he wanted to kiss his cross and say “Lord it’s not my doin.  ”But she helped him rock “Young Blood”  Randy laughed and said “Having fun with Gaga, this is what I love - both sides at a Scotty concert. I think he’s ready.  A seasoned professional.”  Steven loved the humor.  Jennifer said “You really hit your stride and I want to see another side of you next week.”  Ryan asked if he was flirting with Lady Gaga..

Lauren was worried and said “I don’t want America to think I’m evil” while she was considering the Elvis song “Evil” with this weeks guest mentor, Lady Gaga.  Gaga said that the word evil really wasn’t a big deal. That It was great to stick with morals, but she helped Lauren see the humor in the song.  Steven said that tonight her character came out again.  Jennifer saw a performance quality in Lauren and said it was a “serious good performance, vocally it was really really great with a maturity we haven’t seen before,” Randy liked the bluesy quality and that she was working it.

In his pre performance segment James Durbin remarked “When I found out we were working with Lady Gaga I didn’t know what to expect.”  One thing he probably didn’t expect is that Lady Gaga is a seriously great mentor!  She got his hips moving a little then got him as she said it “singing his pants off-moving puts the song into his body.”

Love Potion #9 was the song that got him moving and rocked the American Idol stage.  Jennifer said it showed me you can sing anything and you take any song and put that James thing on it.” Steven remark was a little less clear, but simply “What you can’t do with your voice you did tonight.”

The Top 5 opened American Idol with the song So Happy Together by the Turtles and I couldn’t help thinking they did look very happy together.  Unfortunately, for one contestant this is the last time we will see them as a group of 5.  After 60 million votes one will be going home to make way for the Top 4 show next week.

Jacob Lusk and Lauren Alaina stood together in the “bottom two” section of the stage as Ryan Seacrest drug out their agony.  Lauren was whimpering and tearful as Jacob supported her while trying to keep his own composure.  Jimmy Iovine said that Jacob’s nerves were getting the best of him and that his inner strength needs to come through.  He thought Jacob’s combined performance totaled 6.  Jimmy thought Lauren did great, but in Unchained Melody she pulled back on the songs big note out of fear.  He’s concerned that fear will negatively effect the outcome of Idol for her.

Lady Antebellum debuted their new single “Just a Kiss” and showed off their harmonic strengths.   They sang about “just a kiss goodbye” and sadly, that’s what we had to say to Jacob at the end of the show.  Everyone of the judges and the Top 4 looked sad to see him go.

Were you sad to see Jacob go home?

The American Idol Top 5 are fighting their way to the top and the cold hard truth is one of them is going home.  Steven Tyler got it right when he said “We’re making it real hard for America to vote on Idol because everyone is so good.”  The judges wanted to see different sides to each contestant and they weren’t disappointed.  The performances for the “now and then theme night” were mostly outstanding with only a few dips.

For his “now” performance James Durbin let go withCloser To The Edge” by 30 Seconds to Mars.  Steven thought he kicked the song’s ass.  Jennifer said that we were all feeling it and Randy told him that he showed America he’s not dated in the older rock category.

Jacob Lusk sang No Air” by Jardon Sparks and Chris Brown - a duet and Jacob sang both parts.  That got him into some trouble with the judges.  Jennifer wanted him to “cultivate who Jacob is” and Randy thought the duet was “corny and sharp.”  Finally, Steven said he was waiting for Jacob to find his niche.

Lauren Alaina really shined with her rendition of Carrie Underwood’s “Flat On The Floor.”  Randy thought it was the right direction for her and Steven said she found her niche.  Jennifer declared “We gave the talk, rise to the top, and you’ve done it.”

Scotty McCreery fans got their fix when he sang “Gone” by Montgomery Gentry.  He gave them rock and grit.  Steven told him he “danced with the devil and that was a good thing.”   Jennifer declared “That’s some serious American Idol stuff right there.” Randy grinned and said he rocked the stage.

Haley Reinhart growled her way through an unreleased Lady Gaga song called You and I  Jennifer told her she should try to have that big moment every time.  Randy wasn’t sure if the song did her any favors.  Steven agreed it was a risky song and that she needs just one perfect song to be the American Idol.

Now for the second round of songs selected from the “then” list:

James Durbin was very emotional singing “Without You” by Harry Nilsson.  He was remembering when his family comes to visit and they have to leave and he has to let them go.  Randy felt his emotion and declared this competition is for “You to lose.”

Steven said the emotion and the song met up and Jennifer stated that everyone knows he can sing, but “You have heart and soul to back it up.”  James told the audience that every week with every song he leaves everything on the stage.

Jacob Lusk sang “Love Hurts” and Steven said that everyone got lost in him because he gets lost in the song.  Jennifer only said “congratulations.”  Randy pointed out that he redeemed himself on this song and loved his “Mariah Carey high note.”

Lauren Alaina gave the audience a gift with her rendition of Unchained Melodyby The Righteous Brothers. It was easy to see the judges loved it.  Jennifer could only say “beautiful” and Randy said she’s proved she can sing like a bird.  Steven told her the song was perfect and there was nothing to judge.

Scotty McCreery delighted the judges again with Always On My Mind” by Elvis Presley.  The tenderness in his voice pleased them.  Jennifer remarked that he is a well rounded artist and Randy referred to him as the “youngest veteran.”  Steven said “America loves your voice taking us up and down the trail.”

Haley Reinhart really finished off the evening well with an outstanding interpretation of The Animal’s “House Of The Rising Sun.”  Randy said it was the evenings best performance and Steven told her she “..sold the song.”  Jennifer praised her and said “Great job that song has never been sung like that before.”
